I finally watched Jane Eyre over the weekend and I loved it. I suggest you take the rest of the day off and get theeself to a video store ASAP. Sigh. It was so romantic. And Mr. Rochester was quite lovely...

The husband and I have been invited to a screening of the El Bulli documentary (as part of the Durban International Film Festival) followed by dinner at fine dining restaurant Harvey's on Sunday. By our local video store. How cool is that?! Well, I guess we are pretty loyal customers. The chef at Harvey's will make the food shown in the doccie. Sjoe dude, hope you've been practicing! Just kidding. We've eaten there three times before and the food is really wow.

happy things to look forward to

My parents are coming to visit me in Durban for a week on Sunday. I cannot wait! They were last here two years ago, so I have lots to show them. I'm just sorry that they couldn't have come a bit later in July for the Virginia Airshow (my dad loves anything that flies) and the Durban International Film Festival. The programme was released several days ago and wowzer, there are some awesome movies coming to town. My pick: Toast (based on Nigel Slater's book - that's Helena Bonham Carter in a scene from the movie above), The Tree of Life (the love-it-or-hate-it new Brad Pitt movie), Midnight in Paris (the new Woody Allen movie), Black Venus (about Saartjie Baartman), and Black Butterfiles (about poet Ingrid Jonker).

So my Easter weekend wasn't too exciting. My dog, Amber (she's 15 years old), had to stay at the vet with a drip in her paw last night, so I spent most of my time worrying and praying. I did, however, eat a super yummy meal and watched an arty documentary. The meal was tuna and pea pie and creamed sweetcorn at the Woolies Cafe and the doccie was Exit through the gift shop. The former has me obsessing about how I can recreate its deliciousness at home and the latter was pretty thought provoking, though I wish there had been more of Banksy in it. He seems like a really cool guy.

Oh my. I am so looking forward to seeing Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon. Also can't wait to finally watch the band. Live. In SA. In October. Sigh.

Talking 'bout Kirsten Dunst... She has a new movie coming out this year called Melancholia. It's written and directed by Lars von Trier, so you just know it's gonna be weird beyond. Here's the trailer:

I can't wait for Jane Eyre to come out in South Africa. Yes, I admit I complained bitterly when I had to read it for English Lit at university, but the movie looks great. I really enjoy Mia Wasikowska's performances (especially in The Kids are Alright) and isn't she pretty? Check out these beautiful photos from the photoshoot she did with her co-star for W magazine:

things to do in cape town

So the husband and I are heading to Cape Town at the end of the month!!! Can you tell I'm super-excited? We are going to stay in my parent's flat in Kloof Street (in the same building where  Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds shot their new movie Safe House two weeks ago). Here are some of the things I wanna see, eat, do, shop:
1. Blue Bird Garage Food and Goods Market - This newish market looks pretty cool.
2. Neighbourgoods Market + The Old Biscuit Mill - Went last time I was in the Cape and felt like I was walking through a Parisien market. So many delicious foodie things to choose from. Mmmm
3. Dokter and Misses - Supercool decor things to make my wallet cringe.
4. Birds Boutique Cafe - Love their cakes, juices, lunches and the minimalist decor.
5. Church - Concept shop deluxe.
6. &Union The husband loves their beers.
7. The Food Barn - My mom went here a while ago and made my mouth water as she described her meal.
8. O.live - More nice things to feed my insatiable decor hunger.
9. Field Office - For a coffee fix.
10. San Julian - I love me some Mexican food.
11. El Burro - Another Mexican place I wanna try. Supposedly their fish tacos are outta this world.
12. Haas - Pretty ceramics to add to my collection.
